Last month we predicted that the strong performance reflected in Nanaimo’s June accommodation indicators would continue and July stats have proven this to be true as the community experienced a significant 9.2% increase in its July occupancy rate resulting in an even more significant $32 increase in RevPAR. Although ferry traffic was down somewhat, the Nanaimo Airport reported a 32% increase in passenger traffic – almost 12,000 more people.

June was a banner month for tourism on much of the island and this is reflected in Nanaimo’s accommodation indicators which show an 84% occupancy rate (up almost 7% over last year) and a $118 RevPAR rate (up more than $16 over last year). We anticipate that this strong performance will continue over the summer.

According to the realtor, the owners of the property at 15 Front Street have decided to sell due to increased construction costs (projected costs are now over $13 million, a significant increase from the $8 million that was budgeted) and the inability to find a hotel operator. The property owners had been granted a 10-year tax exemption as long as building was taking place on the property before the end of this year.
