After a slow first quarter for Nanaimo’s accommodation sector, both April and year-to-date accommodation indicators have improved relative to the same periods last year. Transportation indicators have been strong in the first quarter with both BC Ferries and the Nanaimo Airport experiencing strong year-over-year and year-to-date growth. However, occupancy was down by 8% compared to March of last year and, on a year-to-date basis, is down by just over 4%. We anticipate that occupancy will improve as we get further into spring. We also want to take this opportunity to congratulate the Snuneymuxw First Nation on their recently announced innovative tourism development plans for Newcastle Island!
