The Utah-based developer of a hotel on Gordon Street in downtown Nanaimo hopes to begin construction before the end of the year.

The City of Nanaimo expects to issue the building permit by the end of October.

PEG submitted a revised building permit this month, increasing the number of hotel rooms to 172 from 155.

Statistics released Tuesday shows June was a banner month for tourism on the Island compared to a year ago.

In its Tourism Bulletin for Victoria and Nanaimo, Chemistry Consulting says 25 of the 40 Victoria area hotels that took part in the survey reported occupancy rates over 90 per cent last month, compared to 11 last year in the same period.

The average occupancy in June was 89.76 per cent, a seven per cent jump from the same month in 2017.

Hotels are showing a near two per cent increase in hotel occupancy so far in 2018.
