Nanaimo Tourism Bulletins

Nanaimo tourism operators and stakeholders should be pleased with the 2017 performance of the tourism sector as almost all indicators show strong year-over-year growth. Ferry and airport passenger volumes, in particular, were up quite a bit. In turn, the accommodation sector benefitted, recording an overall annual occupancy rate of 71% - which compares to a projected national rate for 2017 of 64%.

With one more month of data to follow, it appears that 2017 was again a fantastic year for our tourism industry. The growth we have experienced in the past four years is now putting significant pressure on wages and benefits, transportation issues, workforce housing and labour shortages. I think that 2018 will provide to be a very interesting year as international and domestic tourism continue to grow.

BC Ferries has announced that they saw the highest passenger numbers in their 2nd quarter (ended Sept. 30) in 20 years. During this quarter both passenger and vehicle traffic climbed 5.2% over the same time last year leading to improved revenues. The favourable exchange rate for US visitors and great weather conditions are key factors contributing to the growth.
