June 2018 - June occupancy exceeds 90% for many hotels!

There are 40 Victoria area hotels that participate in the Tourism Bulletin. The number of these properties reporting a June occupancy rate exceeding 90% increased from 11 in 2017 to 25 in 2018. This increased occupancy rate (7% higher than last year on an overall basis), combined with a $26 increase in ADR, resulted in a $200 RevPAR rate – more than $37 higher than last June.

  • From June 23-28, 2018 the Federal Minister of Small Business and Tourism led her third mission in a year to China to raise awareness of Canada’s unique travel opportunities. Accompanied by reps from Destination Canada, TIAC, ITAC, Parks Canada and tourism operators, the mission resulted in the signing of seven MOUs and partnership agreements – including one between ITAC and a Chinese tour company that will increase the marketing of Canada’s authentic Indigenous tourism experiences to Chinese visitors. At the midway way point of the Canada-China Year of Tourism, Canada has hosted more than 178,000 Chinese visitors – up almost 24% compared to the same period in 2017.
  • In today’s highly competitive tourism economy, effective marketing is increasingly important for tourist products and destinations. As such, consider the observations reported in an article on travel and tourism PR trends and tips in BreakTheIceMedia.com which states that the following ‘tourism promo’ words have become so over-used they’ve lost their meaning: unique, authentic, one-of-a-kind, farm-to-table, award-winning, acclaimed, best of, world-class, off-the-beaten-path, hidden gem, something for everybody, breathtaking, incredible, amazing, craft, bespoke and artisanal. If you use these words in your marketing, you may wish to break out the thesaurus and look for new ways to describe your destination, asset or attraction.
