September 2017 - Strong Hotel Occupancy Carries into the Fall

Nanaimo’s hotel sector has benefited from a strong domestic and international visitation right through 2017 so far. With occupancy rates continuing to be this strong, it will not be long before more hotel operators consider new development.

  • Congratulations to Anthony Everett on his recent appointment to the position of CEO of Tourism Vancouver Island. We are very pleased to have Anthony back on the Island after several years away working with Northern BC Tourism. Anthony will assume his new role in January 2018.
  • According to Stats Canada, there were 18,499 more international visitors to British Columbia in August of 2017 than August 2016, an increase of 2.3%. Year-to-date, international visitation to the province has increased by 2.8%. Mexico led the growth with a 25% increase in visitors, while visitation surged by 23% per cent from Australia and 14.2% from Germany.
  • Nanaimo recently received some great profile in the Toronto Star after author Kim Honey travelled to the area and experienced some of the best Nanaimo has to offer. The article “7 Things You Must Do in Nanaimo” talks about the beauty and walkability of the waterfront, floating “chili bikes”, floating pub, petroglyphs, and of course the infamous Nanaimo Bar. Here is the full article.
