May 2017 - Nanaimo Continues to see Strong Growth!

May marks the start of the busy summer season and Nanaimo’s May tourism stats indicate that the season is off to a good start with almost all year-over-year indicators showing growth. The airport continues to perform very well and hosted almost 30,000 passengers for the month – up more than 7% over 2016. Although not reflected in the indicators below, May also saw three large and two smaller cruise ships visit Nanaimo.

  • BC Ferries’ fiscal year-end financial reports show positive results for the second year in a row. Fiscal 2017 traffic levels are the highest seen since 2008 with 2.9% growth in vehicle traffic and 1.7% growth in passenger traffic compared to fiscal 2016. This strong financial performance has allowed BC Ferries to maintain fares at 2015 levels on most major routes as well as to make much-needed capital investments in renewing the fleet.
  • Nanaimo City Council has appointed members to the newly-formed Tourism Advisory Committee including Chair, Henry Traa and Vice-Chair, Jenn Houtby-Ferguson. In the next several weeks, Committee members will invite tourism industry and community stakeholders to contribute feedback that will be used to shape recommendations to Council on the future governance of Nanaimo's tourism sector. Updates on this process can be found at www.nanaimo.ca/goto/tourism.
  • Christine Willow, Partner at Chemistry Consulting Group, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of Tourism HR Canada. Tourism HR Canada is a national organization that works to identify and address labour market issues in the Canadian tourism sector. Christine brings her passion for the tourism industry and years of HR consulting experience to the organization and looks forward to working with her fellow board members on the key HR issues affecting the tourism industry. www.cthrc.ca
