Nanaimo Outperforms Victoria in March!

Despite the dreary weather we experienced in March, Nanaimo showed impressive growth in many of the indicators that we track. Occupancy for the month and year to date both climbed by approximately 7.5% over 2016 figures. RevPAR was also strong with an $8.45 increase for March over the same month in 2016 and $10.31 increase year to date. BC Ferries traffic on the Tsawwassen-Duke Point run continues to be positive and bus traffic on both routes showed very strong numbers in March.

  • The World Economic Forum has published its comprehensive annual travel and tourism competitiveness report. For 2017, the ten countries topping the global rankings include Spain (1st), France (2nd), Germany (3rd), Japan (4th, gaining five places), the UK (5th), the U.S. (6th, losing two places), Australia (7th), Italy (8th), Canada (9th, up one place) and Switzerland (10th, losing four places).
  • Beginning in February 2017, Tourism Vancouver Island commenced a one-year service agreement with the City of Nanaimo to provide destination marketing and development services. The agreement is structured to operate smoothly while work to re-envision Nanaimo's tourism services is undertaken by the soon to be formed Tourism Advisory Committee. A Tourism Marketing Plan has been delivered to the City by TVI, identifying objectives and targets for the next year. Full Plan:
  • According to a recent survey, it’s the locals who can immediately affect our happiness on vacation, and Canada ranked second globally (as indicated by 33% of respondents) for having some of the most cheery and relaxed locals – second only to Australia (35%).
