April 2017 - Nanaimo Launches a Tourism Ambassador Program!

Nanaimo’s recently launched Tourism Ambassador Program will be a positive addition to the community’s tourism services. The Program will complement the services of the Visitor Centre and involve deploying a pool of friendly volunteers to key tourism areas to welcome visitors and provide them with information. Anything that contributes to the quality of the visitor experience will help generate positive word-of-mouth promotion which is so important in today’s competitive tourism market.

  • Thanks to the BC Air Access Program, the Nanaimo Airport will soon begin an expansion of the northern apron that will improve safety and provide a robust and durable aircraft apron to reduce congestion airside. This $351,215 infrastructure project, funded through a Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure program, will be completed in the coming months. New projections estimate that by 2020, 450,000 passengers will use the Nanaimo Airport annually. Based on these forecasts, the Nanaimo Airport will remain a major economic catalyst for the central Island into the future and is estimated to support 2,000 jobs and generate $358 million in economic activity annually to the region by 2021. www.nanaimoairport.com
  • Congratulations to Danny Sitnam, Helijet President & CEO, for being named as an inductee into the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame. Launched in 1986, Helijet is now the largest helicopter airline in the world. The ability for Helijet’s helicopters to fly at night and in less than ideal weather conditions was a game changer for travellers between Vancouver Islander and the mainland, improving access and efficiency. Danny is admired for his leadership and community contributions, and is recognized as an exceptional leader, mentor and motivator by colleagues and employees alike.
