HR Tips - Training & Career Development

  • Create career paths for positions within your company and provide this information to your staff. It may not be how their career progresses, but it lets them know about the possibilities.
  • Encourage job shadowing so that people get an understanding of what is going on in a different position or with a different department.
  • If you have multiple offices in other countries, encourage people to consider moving to another country for a term. This helps to build consistency within your organization and would provide a fun and interesting opportunity for some individuals.
  • Ensure that your supervisors and managers are not just subject matter experts, but also know how to lead a team.
  • Provide reimbursement for educational programs that support employees in their current or next positions. An educational reimbursement program may also be available for personal interest courses.
  • To get the best out of your team, provide them with opportunities for growth and future development.
  • Utilize subject matter experts within your company to develop and facilitate the orientation program. This approach allows people to share what they know and be part of a new employee's success.
  • Provide the opportunity for "lunch & learns" for your staff. These are short sessions on topics of interest and could include: healthy eating alternatives, local recycling programs, a yoga session, etc. A representative from your Employee Assistance Program may be able to host these. People could bring their own lunch and enjoy some sharing time.
  • Toastmasters is a great vehicle to help individuals improve their public speaking skills.
