HR Tips - Terminations

  • If you need to let someone go, the rule of thumb is to have the conversation in private, early in the week and late in the day. You need to show them respect.
  • When you have to terminate an employee either because of performance or business need, it can have an adverse affect on other members of your team. Be emphathetic and supportive.
  • Consider providing career transition services through an external company for people who you have to let go.
  • Conduct exit interviews with employees who are leaving the company as this could provide you with some good insight into your business culture. Exit interviews should be done by Human Resources for a perspective from outside of the department.
